FDA Clearance: What Patients Should Know

Is dental AI “FDA approved”?

Most dental AI tools are FDA-cleared, not FDA-approved. These are different.

FDA clearance (510(k)) means the company showed that its device is “substantially equivalent” to another legally marketed device.

It can then be marketed for specific uses. It does NOT mean:

  • that FDA tested the algorithm itself
  • that the AI is superior to a dentist
  • that it works equally well in all settings

What does FDA clearance mean?

It means:

  • the company submitted evidence to FDA
  • the tool can be sold for the specific purpose listed
  • the device met regulatory standards for its intended use

Does FDA clearance guarantee accuracy?

No. Performance varies across machines, sensors, image quality, and patient differences. Dentists interpret AI results.

Should I ask if the AI my dentist uses is FDA-cleared?

Yes—patients can always ask what AI tools are used, what their purpose is, and how they support care.

Questions Patients Can Ask Their Dentist

  • Do you use AI in your practice?
  • What does the AI highlight in my X-ray?
  • How does AI help with my care?
  • Are there limitations I should know about?
  • Does AI affect the cost or length of my visit?
